"I Am An Innocent Person" (Raoul Auclair)

(Raoul Auclair)

In 1973, Raoul Auclair published the new book of the Cycles. Father André Richard gave an entire page of L'Homme Nouveau over to it. He ended his article with a quotation from Raoul.

"What can I myself say of this astonishing work for which I was only able to provide an outline? As I read it, the words of Festus, the Procurator, often came to mind when he addressed Paul as the latter stood before the tribunal: `You have gone mad, Paul; your great learning has made you lose your mind.' Paul defended himself very well and Raoul Auclair, in his preface, himself replied to our exclamation, which he foresaw.

" `I am not a scholarly man, and even less a wise one. What am I? «An innocent man». The gods are lenient towards the innocent ones, and more so, perhaps, in these times than in any other, when too much knowledge sterilizes the mind and hardens the world. The gods know very well that the innocent one keeps nothing for himself, not enclosing the gift in his fisted hand but letting it flow. Moreover, he is so simple that he rejoices more over an apple than a pearl. And geniuses, just for fun, giving an apple, occasionally throw in a few pearls.' " (May 20, 1973)
