SUPPORT OF MISSIONARY WORKS

In the Diocese of Mandeville in Jamaica where the Sons and Daughters of Mary work, there is a tremendous need. Poverty strikes at families and destroys the make-up of society.

From the moment the mission was opened, the Knights of Mary wishing to collaborate in this missionary endeavor, quickly came to its aid materially by generously offering donations for the most impoverished.

High School in Bull Savannah
In order to help this people and more particularly the more destitute, the Sons of Mary established a high school on their grounds, next to their residence in Bull Savannah, located in the southern part of the diocese, along the splendid Caribbean Sea.

Lay and consecrated members of the Sons and Daughters of Mary have been ardently working to provide an excellent humane and moral education to the young people attending the first Catholic school in the area.

Preschool in Black River
A little further to the west, in Black River, the Daughters of Mary are responsible for a preschool bringing together over one hundred little islanders. There again, a collaboration “like within a family” exists with the lay members of the Family of the Sons and Daughters of Mary and is evidence of the evangelical spirit motivating our members.

Our Lady of Hope Children’s Home
On the same grounds in the parish of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, is located the Our Lady of Hope Children’s Home which has taken up residence in the large colonial house renovated in 1995 through the generous and impressive cooperation of men and women belonging to the Family of the Sons and Daughters of Mary.

“Flower of Hope” – a sponsorship program –
In their missionary zeal, certain members manifested the desire to sponsor a Jamaican child through the offering of a monthly donation in order either to help defray the costs of his schooling which, too often, he is forced to abandon because of poverty, or to see to the basic needs of an orphan child. This program is known as the “Flower of Hope” program, and in 1998, had more than sixty benefactors or sponsors.

“The Catholic Mission of Mandeville Inc.” – support of missionary works –
Given the generosity of benefactors and to facilitate transactions, a corporation known as “The Catholic Mission of Mandeville Inc.” was established and registered with the Canadian government, in response to the express desire of the bishop of Mandeville in Jamaica, His Excellency Most Reverend Paul Michael Boyle, C.P., who welcomed the missionaries in his diocese.

The purpose of the Corporation is to bring together the funds donated by generous benefactors who wish to support the apostolic works of the diocese which have been entrusted to the Community of the Sons and Daughters of Mary, such as the high school in Bull Savannah, the preschool in Black River and the orphanage, as well as other apostolic activities in aid of the more destitute.

To date, in 1998, more than two hundred benefactors from the Work support all the missionary endeavors.
