LIFE OF LOVE - X
The Pope of Mary
(September 1974 - May 1975)

The Army of Mary is in Rome. During a farewell banquet, His Excellency Bishop van Lierde addresses the pilgrims:

“(...) After those wonderful stopovers in Lourdes, the Rue du Bac, Lisieux and the one you will begin tomorrow in Fatima, I believe that this is your first pilgrimage of the Army of Mary which has come to Europe and to the center of Catholicism here in Rome.

“This truly constitutes a turning point, let me say, a turning point in the ascension, a continuous going up. I seem to have detected in your presence, in your manifestations from their beginning, a certain spontaneous discipline; there’s no mistake about that in this era when all authority is contested. We see here a group of four hundred people who are so calm, so united, perfectly disciplined. You’re an army; but an army without discipline is worthless. I say this because I have seen it; you have my sincerest congratulations.

“You are a special army, distinctive; little division, the whole marching along with a discipline that is an acknowledgment of its spirit, its élan, its interior inspiration. I see it, I sense it; a very wonderful cohesion. Could it be, perhaps, the Blessed Virgin distributing her gifts of grace, of kindness, of service one towards the other? That is surely what it is, this cohesion that is begotten of grace, of an education that is most exquisite, most delicate – I would say, thoroughly national, but Catholic also.

“This Army of Mary founded by the Blessed Virgin in the land of the French-Canadian language, is also open to all the other English-speaking persons of that country and to the peoples of all other countries, because already your little family is beginning to grow, to strike its roots pretty much everywhere.

“Oh! what strength emanates from this gentle discipline, from this active, concentrated cohesion! And the strength of this pacific army is not some sort of presumption. Presumption is not one of your characteristics. I would not hesitate to say that it is rather gentleness and humility. In the modern world of today, the sense of an education that is basically humane and Christian, has been lost. But if care is not taken, we are going to lose, increasingly this humaneness, this sense of us being, all of us, the image of God. Carry on in this wonderful cohesion, in this spirit of force which is all the strength of your army. Keep on advancing.” (Chapter 6)
